1820s - from a regional history
book: "John Bryson, Andy Cathy, Oliver Painter, Pete
Long, Thos Henson, Manson Shuler, Hugh Bryson, Silas Watson,
William Watson and Enoch Underwood had organized
a subscription school near Cullowee to guarantee the salary of
the teacher Zeke Shuler who had been hired to teach their 16
sons and daughters in a small log house owned by Major Hamilton
Bryson."
