Woodson’s father sent Woodson Jr. from the farm in Virginia to Georgia on a "tobacco" train (wagons). Woodson Jr. set up harness/pharmacy in (or around) Gordon Co. One of his brothers (believed to be Robert) ran this business with him.

During the civil war, Woodson came across a Yankee that had a flute from his father’s home and the Dowdy family bible. He was able to retrieve the items back. We believe that his father (Woodson Sr.) was killed and the farm burned in Franklin Co, VA, shortly before Woodson’s encounter with the Yankee.

Woodson died putting out fires abt 1864 in Gordon Co. He was one of the local folk that helped put out fires after Sherman came through. The other brother went missing.

Wife Mary was struck with grief and went into a deep depression after Woodson’s death. She was alone on their farm and with two sons (Edgar and Robert). She noted in the diary that "she watched Sherman burn the countryside".

Mary wrote of her second marriage to a "Beford Jones". Bedford had gone to California for gold and on the way back to Georgia was nearly frozen and picked up by Indians, who nursed him back to health around Vicksburg, MS. He married Mary after his return to GA.
