Note: A Richard Dowdy appears to have a son named Martin Dowdy in early Cumberland VA. A Richard Dowdy married a daughter (name?) of Henry Martin who died 1752 in Cumberland VA. Some of Henry Martin's children moved to Georgia. Genforum posting of a Richard Dowdy states that the above Richard Dowdy was born 1744 in Newbern District NC.

2. Martin Dowdy b 4 May 1760 d 20 Oct 1845, Oglethorpe Co, GA. John Martin (son of Henry Martin of Cumberland VA) left 50 acres to Martin Dowdy in his 1777 will.

23 March 1778 - Cumberland Co. VA - Will of John Martin of Littleton Parish, date 3 January 1777, Pro. 23 March 1778. My cousin, Stephen Martin, son of Benjamin Martin, plantation whereon I now live and half of adjoining land; to Martin Dowdy, son of Richard Dowdy, the other half; rest of my estate to be sold and equally divided between all my brothers and sisters. "GA Gen Mag" July 1965, No. 17, pg 1059: Ga Colonial Records:  Book "J" of misc. bonds, deeds of gifts, contracts, RTC.pg 121 JOHN MIMMACK of GA, schoolmaster, to RICHARD DOWDY of GA, pumpmaker [SHS **] Power of Attorney dated Aug 20, 1757 to collect all debts due him, etc. Witnesses: JOHN WILSON, RICHARD KITCHENER. Probated by latter before JOSEPH OTTOLENGHE, JP. District of Savannah. Sworn Sept 10, 1757; re-corded Sept 12, 1757.

In "Colonial Records of the State of GA" by Candler: pg 677, Dec 1757 Petition of RICHARD DOWDEE setting forth that he was Settled in the Province & possessed no lands therein having a Family consisting of a Wife & 2 Children & desirous of obtaining a Grant of Lands for cultivation And Praying for 250 A of land at Newport adjoining the South West line of Lands granted WILLIAM DAVIS which if granted the Petitioner engaged to cultivate & improve the same.

pg 914 Mar 1759 Read a Petition of RICHARD DOWDEE setting forth that he had granted him 200 A of land at Newport which he had not surveyed & the warrant granted for that purpose was out of date, the Petitioner desireth to resign his Right to Land & to have the Land his Family entitled him to ask for granted in one place, having a Wife & 5 Children [SHS-my note: from "Wife & 2 Children in Dec 1757" to "Wife & 5 Children" in Mar 1759!!] & 2 Negroes therefore praying for 400 A on Heron's Island fronting North Newport River joining South West Lands granted the Widow CROOK incl'd 2 small Islands of about 10 A each. Rejected.
