I have been researching William S. Dowdy for a long time. I am a descendent through his son, Napoleon, and boy let me tell you his family has been a bane to my genealogy endeavors for a long time. Of course, the challenge is part of what makes this hobby fun.

So here goes.

William S. Dowdy is the son of Jesse Dowdy and Dorothea "Dolly" Davenport. They are listed as his parents in his 1856 marriage to Sarah Farmer Chenault (document attached). Dolly Dowdy is in his household on the 1860 census as being 80, which matches the age of Dorothea Davenport.

His father, Jesse Dowdy, is the nephew of James Dowdy. Although I don't have any documents stating this, I've come on this conclusion because 1. Jesse Dowdy (son of James) passed away in 1821. In 1822 his brother, James Dowdy, is appointed full executorship of his father's estate due to his brother's death and administrator of his brother, Jesse's estate (attached) (later, Hez Ford is named de bonis non). 3. In the chancery records, Thomas Dowdy, Jr. of Halifax, VA (I have a summons of him from this county), sells his interest in Jesse’s estate so that part of the land may be sold to settle Thomas’ debts (I do have copies of this if you want them). There are no children of Jesse or spouse mentioned in the chancery records. James' will is clear that if any of his children predecease their mother, the inheritance will go to his children's heirs. William S. Dowdy is not mentioned at all. (The records do mention a William Dowdy, son of Elizabeth dec’d, daughter of James. Further documents clarify him as William H. Dowdy. Additionally, in the judgment of the final chancery case closed in 1848 Jesse Dowdy, son of James, never married and had no issue “That Jesse Dowdy the son of the said testator departed this life in the life time of the said Frances, unmarried and without issue…” (attached, bottom line of pg 1, top lines of pg 2). 4. Jesse Dowdy, father of Ann & Wm S., is alive in 1840 when he signs his consent for his daughter's marriage to Elias Coleman (you already have this noted on your website). Lavinia Coleman parent's are listed as Jesse & Dolly Dowdy on her death record in Aug. of 1880 in Prince Edward Co, VA.

The property of 153 acres on Davenport Road belongs to Jesse, son of James, part of this land is sold to settle a debt of Thomas Dowdy, Jr. The rest becomes part of James Dowdy, Sr. property in judgment of final chancery case closed 1848 (note tax books reflect this, although I haven't found a deed to verify this, yet. Of course, at the time I wasn't looking for land being sold by James, either).

William's first wife is Mariza A. Anderson (daughter of Jacob Anderson and Elizabeth "Betsy" Davis) as acknowledged in the attached 1843 deed. William 3/16/1807-05/1880 (he died intestate in May 1880 (according to the Federal Mortality Schedule, I have the settlement and inventory of his estate) & Mariza 4/15/1814-8/25/1855 (death record listed as Mariah). Children: Alexander Shelton 1833-10/2/1853 (death recorded has him listed as Shelton), Elizabeth M. (m. William Dunford) 1/27/1834-9/20/1863, Mariah S. (m. Allen Flippen) 12/11/1835-11/19/1863, Ann Elizabeth (m. John Wilkerson) 2/17/1838, Marinda 4/5/1839-12/14/1842, William James 10/2/1840-12/17/1842, Mariza C. 8/25/1842-8/24/1863, Leonville 04/1844-03/30/1862 (listed on death record as L. Dowdy), Hannah Rebecca (Nat. A. Dowdy) 3/20/1848-bef. 1885, and Napoleon B. 1/29/1852-4/1898 (died in Buckingham Co., VA). Children with Sarah Chenault are Emmet, & Milton Farmer. Most of these dates are courtesy of the Wilkerson Family Bible. I can forward you a copy if you are interested. The bible also list Dolly “D” Dowdy’s date of death as 1/23/1865.

Of course, now that I finally determined that William S. is the son of Jesse the nephew of James Dowdy. I am now on the quest to find proof of Jesse’s father. The only other records I’ve found for him is a small chancery case regarding his father-in-law’s estate in 1805.

I have a lot of documents relating to many of the Dowdys in Cumberland, Co., since I was looking into anything that might give me a clue of this family. I can forward them to you upon request.

On a side note…in James Dowdy’s settlement of estate, I noticed that the 2 Jesse’s are noted. It seems that the son is denoted as Jesse Dowdy, jr and the nephew just as Jesse Dowdy. This form is used multiple times throughout the records (even on the 1820 Fed. Census). Would you have a reason why this may be? (My only guess of this, is that maybe because he would have been younger than my ancestor and it was a way to distinguish between the two. Like how people today might be referred to as Big Jesse and Little Jesse – love to hear your thoughts on this). I know the use of senior and junior didn't really become popular until this time period or a little later.

My lineage branch #10 is definitely one with a warning and not without cause! (and I know many, many people have assumed and listed Jesse, who married Dorothea Davenport, the son of James, Jr. and Francis without any conclusive evidence to do so. Or like this website, list him under William Dowdy directly, which I feel is far-fetched since William Dowdy seemed to have died before 1800 and the earliest date of birth for William S is 1807).

Right how the website has William S. Dowdy the son of William Dowdy. Which he is the son of Jesse Dowdy and Dorothea Davenport. The website also credits said Jesse with property of 153 acres which should be under Jesse, Jr.

William S. Dowdy's first wife is listed as Elizabeth and should be changed to Mariza A. Anderson. (Although 2 deeds I acquired from Cumberland County on my last visit there list her name has Eliza (one of these state her father as Jacob Anderson), I have enough proof that her name is Mariza. Including the bible record, a deed, and records from a suit against Mariza's maternal grandfather, Jesse Davis' estate that was done on her and her siblings behalf by Jacob Anderson, her father. I also have 8 deeds of Wm S. Dowdy, and 1 deed relating to the Chancery Case against his estate by Nathanial Archer Dowdy, his son-in-law. (I don't believe any of these deeds are on your site. I do know that some of what I have is reflected, so I'll be happy to go through what I have more thoroughly to avoid duplication.

I did see mention of the Halifax reference regarding Lucy Hubbard Dowdy and Patsy Archer Dowdy on the site - I mentioned this because it just further verifies that the Dowdys of Halifax and Cumberland are related. The chancery records on the Library of Virginia has been helpful since that is where I obtained the information that Jesse, Jr. died unmarried and without issue. The other documents I got in Cumberland County on my last visit there. Some of what I have is on your website, some isn't. Some things I have are circumstantial, i.e., like a chancery record I found on the LoV website stating that Thomas Dowdy's plantation is called Rose Cottage - this is the same name that Poindexter Dowdy refers to his plantation that he wills to his son George.
