1646 Richard Dudley, of Elizabeth City county (1646), was fined, with Capt. Christopher Colthorpe, Francis Ceeley, James Harris, Richard Wells, John Hartwell, William Sawyer and Hugh Dowdy, 200 pounds tobacco each, for not rendering their accounts, as guardians, to the York court. "This suggests," says Mr. Tyler (in William and Mary Quarterly, I.), "that they may have married widows."
