AMELIA COUNTY 1774 Apr 3 Hezekiah Ford of Amelia to Wm Ford of same....wit: Thos Ellis, Daniel Walthall, John Dowdy, Thos Whiteworth 1786 July 17. Marriage: Richard Dowdy and Martha Eans, daughter of Alexander C. Fowler who consents. Witness to consent: Sherwood Fowler and Edmund Fowler. Surety: Henry Eans. 1786 Nov 27 Quarterly Court - OB 18 - Jonathan B. Dawson, plt vs Samuel Harper, deft. Upon a writ of injunction. On the motion of the plt by his atty, a commission is awarded him to examine and place the deposition of Claiborne Doudy, he giving the deft reasonable notice of the time and place of executing the same. 1787 "CENSUS"
1788 Aug 28 Quarterly Court - OB 19 - Upon the complaint of Bartlett Baugh against Claiborne Dowdy for misdemeanors tending to a breach of the peace in the Court yard, sundry witnesses were sworn adn examined touching the charge aforesaid, and the said Dowdy was heard in his own defense. Court rules that the deft be amerced in the sum of L5 and that he give security for the payment thereof, payable Christmas next, and that he be bound to his good behavior for the term of 12 months, with a security of 20L and that he remain in custody of the Sheriff until he give security. The said Claiborne Dowdy committed an insult in the face of the Court by making an affray and insulting the Sheriff in the presence of the Court. Court orders that the Sheriff summon a sufficient guard to be armed if necessary to confine him in jail until he pays his fine, and gives security as before mentioned. 1789 Jan 26 - OB 19 - at a meeting of the justices of Amelia Co to lay out and assess the county levy for 1788 [long table of assessments]
1789 Mar 27 - Quarterly Court - OB 19 - On the information of William B. Giles gent, deputy attorney for this county that Claiborne Dowdy hath opposed the Sheriff of this County in the due and legal execution of his office and duty, and has also committed a contempt to this court while sitting, it is the opinion of the court that he be fined in the sum of L10.0.0 and that he be committed to jail until he pay the same or give security for paying the same at the next laying of the county levy, and that the Sheriff summon a sufficient guard to the said prison to prevent the said Dowdy from escaping or breaking the same. 1790 Personal Tythable List
